Mayor Bruce Dunning

Born and raised in Virden, Mayor Dunning was the Senior Petroleum Inspector with the Manitoba Petroleum Branch Engineering and Inspection Section for 31 years and now has his own oilfield consulting company. He also holds director's positions on the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority Board, the Trans-Canada West Planning Board, and is Chairman of the Wallace District Fire Board.

 

Mayor Dunning is past Provincial Pepresentative on both the Canadian Petroleum Safety Council and the Enform Training Course Review Committee, past Chairman of the Manitoba Oil Museum and Interpretive Center and past Provincial Director of the Shintani Wado-Kai Karate Federation.

 

He spends most of his leisure time renovating his heritage home but his greatest pleasure is spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

 

 

Roy Potter

Originally raised in Cromer, Manitoba, Potter moved to Virden, Manitoba with his family.  He completed his education in Virden and began employment with the Valleyview Co-op in July 1971, working his way into Management.  He has recently retired after 35 years with Valleyview Coop.

 

Roy married Donna Tyhy in 1975 and they have two sons. Randy is in Management with Manitoba Highway in Thompson and Christopher who is also in Management with Manitoba Highways in Brandon.

 

He was first elected to council in a by-election in 1994 and his interests include his family, golf, travel and spending time at his cabin.

 

Councilor Maxine Chacun 

Chacun  was raised in the Lenore District and graduated from Virden Collegiate. She has resided in Virden since 1965. She and her husband, Marcel, have always been self-employed in the construction and food service industries. They have three adult children and three granddaughters.

 

Maxine has been a Town of Virden Councillor since 1995 and a member of the urban directors for the Western District of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities since November 2006.

 

She has belonged to the Virden Royal Purple for 37 years and enjoys volunteering at her church, St. Paul's United, and other community organizations.

 

Councilor Terry Johnson (Deputy Mayor)

Terry Johnson was born and raised in the Manson area and finished his education in Virden.  He Received a Diploma in Electrical Technology at RRCC and worked for Manitoba Hydro as an engineering technologist in the engineering and construction fields for over 13 years.


He took over the family farm in 1980 and farmed a mixed grains and livestock operation for 23 years.
Presently Johnson lives in Virden and works for the Sunrise Credit Union in Ag lending and risk assessment.


Councillor Johnson has had the rare privilege of being a former Councillor and Reeve in the RM of Archie, and chaired the former Virden health district # 10. In addition he previously was a chairman of the Manitoba Crop Insurance Corporation, former chairman of the Manitoba Crop Insurance Appeal Tribunal, former chair of the Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council, former member of the executive of the Manitoba Farm Stewardship Association, former president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #58 in Elkhorn, Manitoba, and other local community organizations.

 

Councillor Johnson and his wife Joan presently reside in Virden and have for over eight years.

 

Councilor Jeff McConnell

Councilor McConnell practices law at McNeill Harasymchuk McConnell and has been a member of Town of Virden Council since 1998.  He has been a Member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities since 2002 and loves living in Virden.


Councilor McConnell and his wife, Margaret, have two children, Beth and Alex, as well as Bailey, the family dog.  While he grew up in Winnipeg and was educated at the University of Manitoba, Councilor McConnell has been a resident of Virden since 1994. 

 

 

Councilor Tony Schneider

Schneider has lived in Virden for 36 years.  She is married to Tom Schneider and they have 2 children.  They have owned their own commercial painting business TnT Concepts for 11 years.  Schneider belongs to Sacred Heart Parish and the women's choir, Noteable Women.

Councilor Herb Warkentin
Warketin married Marie Walker of Reeder, Manitoba and was employed by Henuset Pipelines.  In January 1972 he bought Clem Chacun building moving business and later calling it Warkentin Building Movers.  He operated it over 30 years, with his son Wayne taking over the business after his retirement.  Warkentin has served on several boards such as St. Pauls United Church, VCRC and Valleyview Co-Op.  He was also a Kinsmen member and an Associate Legion Member and is now beginning his second term on Virden Town Council.
