Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze

Come and join us for an exciting, action-packed weekend at the 33rd Annual Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze August 17 to 20, 2023.

A free stakeholder and community barbecue in Victoria Park, sponsored by COREX Resources, kicks things off over the noon hour on Thursday.  In the evening, Downtown Daze, organized and hosted by the Virden Community Chamber of Commerce, takes over the town’s main business district.  It’s a fun atmosphere with live entertainment, a variety of food and activities for all ages to enjoy.  In the kids’ zone, you’ll find inflatables, carnival games and face painting.  There’s a mechanical bull, local vendors and displays, and much more.  Take a trip back in time and check out the vintage rides at the Westman on Wheels Show & Shine located at the Virden Farmers Market area (weather permitting).

Three semi-pro rodeo performances, held in the Tundra Oil & Gas Place arena, attract top-caliber competitors from across the prairie provinces as well as the northern U.S.A., New Zealand and Australia.  On Shootout Sunday, the best in each of the nine events, as well as the slack, return to compete for an added purse of prize money, championship jackets and saddles.  Sunday is also Family Day, with rodeo fans 15 and under admitted free of charge.  Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze is dual sanctioned by the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association (MRCA) and the Canadian Cowboys Association (CCA).  It is known as a make-or-break event for cowboys and cowgirls wanting to earn points towards the MRCA and CCA Finals in the fall.

On Friday, youth from throughout the province take part in the Manitoba High School Rodeo Competition, vying for the coveted titles of High Point Junior or High School Cowboy or Cowgirl.  A pancake and sausage breakfast, prepared and served by members of the Virden Lions Club, starts off Saturday, followed by a town-wide parade.  In the afternoon, a tailgate party, including barbecued bison burgers, a beer garden, live music, carnival games and inflatables leads up to the evening rodeo performance.

In the arena on Sunday it’s the Manitoba Calf Ropers Unlimited Tie-Down and Breakaway Roping Finals.  Outdoors, a 3D Barrel Racing Jackpot, sanctioned by the Manitoba Barrel Racing Association, takes place on the fairgrounds both Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

On the social side, relax with friends in the Barn Bar on Friday evening.  The following night, kick up your heels at one of Virden’s biggest social events of the year – the Daze Dance in the Virden Curling Club, complete with a live band.

The Virden Demolition Derby, featuring a variety of car and truck heats, door prizes and a 50/50 draw, is held on Sunday afternoon.  The track is located on Provincial Road 257, 1/8 of a mile west of the Trans-Canada Highway. It is the largest annual fundraiser for the Virden Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
