Wildlife Policy


  • Wildlife is a natural part of the community and should be respected and protected.
  • Public safety is the top priority in all wildlife situations.
  • The Town focuses on prevention, education, and safe coexistence with wildlife.
  • Residents should never feed wildlife, as it can make animals aggressive and dependent on humans.

Who is Responsible:

  • Town of Virden 
    • Manages wildlife issues on town-owned property.
    • Provides public education on wildlife safety.
    • Keeps public spaces (garbage, parks, compost areas) clean and managed to reduce attractants.
    • Refers serious wildlife issues to provincial authorities.
  • Province of Manitoba (Conservation and Climate) 
    • Has legal authority over wildlife management.
    • Handles dangerous wildlife situations.
    • Issues permits and manages relocation or removal of wildlife when needed.
  • Residents 
    • Do not feed or attract wildlife.
    • Secure garbage, compost, and other food sources.
    • Maintain properties to reduce wildlife access (fencing, cleanup, etc.).
    • Keep pets under control.
    • Report dangerous wildlife situations.

Wildlife Encounters:

  • Stay calm and keep your distance.
  • Do not approach, touch, or try to move wildlife.
  • Keep pets leashed and close.
  • Report aggressive or unsafe wildlife immediately.

Types of Situations:

  • Non-emergency (common sightings, minor issues): 
    • Managed through education and prevention advice.
    • May be referred to provincial resources.
  • Emergency (dangerous or aggressive wildlife): 
    • Call Manitoba Conservation or 911 if there is immediate danger.
